Do I need a passport to cruise?

2 min. readlast update: 06.17.2025

Because documentation requirements vary by the citizenship and residence of each passenger (as well as the specific ports that your cruise visits), it is your responsibility to determine what documentation is required and to acquire that documentation before the cruise.  For additional details regarding identification requirements, please CLICK HERE.

Whether or not you need a passport for a cruise often depends on your itinerary and citizenship. Here's a clear breakdown to help you understand when a passport is required—and when it’s not.

🛳️ 1. Closed-Loop Cruises (U.S. Citizens Only)

A closed-loop cruise starts and ends at the same U.S. port (e.g., roundtrip from Miami, Galveston, or Los Angeles).

✅ Passport is not required — but you must bring:

  • A government-issued photo ID (like a valid driver’s license)
    AND

  • An original or certified copy of your birth certificate

⚠️ This applies only to U.S. citizens. Permanent residents and foreign nationals typically need a passport.

🌎 2. International or Open-Jaw Cruises

If your cruise starts and ends in different ports or departs from a foreign port (e.g., Rome to Barcelona), you will need:

  • A valid passport (plus additional documentation may be required)

  • In some cases, a visa may also be required for certain countries

🌐 3. Cruises That Visit Certain Countries

Even on closed-loop cruises, a few countries may still require a passport for entry, including:

  • Brazil

  • China

  • Russia

  • Some European countries

  • Certain parts of South America or Asia

Check destination entry requirements before you cruise.

🛂 Why It’s Still a Good Idea to Bring a Passport

Even when not required, a passport is strongly recommended because:

  • You may need to fly home from a foreign port unexpectedly

  • It simplifies immigration procedures

  • It allows you to explore more freely in certain ports

The above is a general guideline.  It is the responsibility of the guest to verifiy specific identification requirements based on their cruise itinerary, ports of call, residency & citizenship.  Additional guidance can be found here.
